Tony’s Story: The Story Behind the Golf Outing
On February 20, 1997, a propane gas explosion in a vacation cottage left me with 3rd and 4th degree burns over 93% of my body. An ice storm grounded the life flight helicopter twice in Wisconsin and was taken to four different hospitals before rescue workers could find one that could treat such a large injury. Eventually, I ended up at Regions Hospital in Saint Paul, Minnesota. It was a 9-month struggle to survive.
While in the hospital, friends and family organized fundraisers. One was a softball tournament. I watched the videotape when I got home it helped me to reconnect with life as I continued on in my recovery to what many survivors refer to as the “new normal”. What I also saw in that video was people having fun and, more importantly, coming together in support and hope in the wake of tragedy. That event continued on for 4 years and has since evolved into this golf tournament.
In 1999, I attended my first World Burn Conference sponsored by The Phoenix Society. The conference focuses on a variety of physical and psychological issues that burn survivors, their families, and burn care professionals must face. It was there that I found inspiration, confidence, and motivation. It was truly a powerful and emotional life-changing event for me and my family, who have also attended several times.
With your support. My goal is to give others the opportunity to attend the conference who would not otherwise be able to without financial assistance and to help those affected by a burn injury to go on to lead happy and fulfilling lives.
In advance, I send my heartfelt thanks for your consideration
